"And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every lving thing that moveth upon the earth." Genesis 1:28 (KJV).

Three or four decades ago it was not uncommon for African American married couples to have as many as ten children. In the 21st century, two or three children are considered more desirable numbers for a middle class, African American married couple. Although it is rarely discussed from the pulpit, more and more African American couples are participating in voluntarily sterilization after two or three children are born. Inflation is a reality. Children are expensive and couples often want to focus on their own fulfillment and professional goals after sacrificing so much time and energy to raising their children. Subsequently, many couples decide that the wife should undergo tubal ligation

("tubes tied") at age thirty five or younger.

What does the Bible say about physically healthy Christians participating in this form of voluntary sterilization or using any form of contraception within marriage? According to Genesis 1:28 "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth over the earth (KJV)". Are Christians attempting to take family planning into their own hands and out of God?s hands? How often is this topic addressed at the pulpit, or at Bible study? GodTalkNow.Com wants to know your thoughts and experiences on this issue effecting women and the African American community?

Kay says:

It would appear that we have been fruitful and have multiplied. It is folly to bring children into the world that one cannot feed and one cannot educate. The Black community already has many, many "throw away" children. Why not spend time helping these young people grow and go? There are millions of children all over the world who don't eat and can't get an education. Why not focus on those? The earth has been "replenished". We need to focus on bringing excellence out of the existing children on this planet that desperately need out help. Every good and perfect gift comes from God...I believe that includes birth control. Sometimes, you just have to use wisdom. The earth is no longer "void"!!

It's a shame, because not only are we dictating to God our prevention but African Americans are also losing our nation. The 2000 census showed that our numbers as a community is not the number one minority group anymore. We're stopping our own growth and dominion because of our own, many times, selfishness. It is important for healty African Americans to continue to build up our numbers. Contraceptives, voluntary sterilization upon men or woman is a disservice to God's humanity.
