As a human being we are created with a great deal of extraordinary abilities, qualities and strengths that no other creation shares with us. There is no doubt we are much favored compared to other creations. The question I want to discuss in this article is, how big or great are these strengths and how much can we actually use.
Obviously we have a lot of different strengths and abilities meant to serve us in different ways. I would like to have a closer look at one specific ability we hold which I don't believe we use as much as we could. I am talking about the human brain, its power and features. Although it's never easy to give insight into such a vast and complex matter as the human brain, I will try to give a view on how we can make the most out of our brain's potential.
The brain performs many incredible tasks such as controlling body temperature, blood pressure and heart rating. It also deals with various other important tasks like hearing, seeing, tasting, walking, sitting and many others physical actions. It lets you think, reason and feel emotional experiences. If you want to do something, it has to go through your mind first. And all this happens without the slightest effort from us. Now that's powerful. Our mind is extraordinary we should appreciate it a lot more than we probably do. Now there is also a special gift inside our brain which I believe most of us do not explore to its fullest potential, namely the memory and its capacity.
Our memory is really incredible
First of all the memory's job is to store information. We can divide the brain into two parts, the short-term memory and the long-term memory. The short-term memory is the active memory, the one that receives information and determines what can be done with it. the long-term memory. remember's information.
My question to you is: Do you really understand to the fullest the great ability and capacity our brain's have? Do you believe if I say to you that your brain's can store information equal to 1 million volume's of books or 3 millions DVDs (that's roughly 500 years of video)? Now, that's what our brain's can do! The size of our brain is estimated to be 1130 cm3 and weighs about 1.5 kg. The numbers are slightly smaller for women. Do you believe a brain that small can store, archive and recall information worth 1 million volume's of books?
I hope your eyes haven't increased in size. All this is true and all medical or scientific findings suggest it to be so. The truth is, our brain can store information to the infinite. There is no limit. It will never be exhausted. In fact if you could sit down and read book's all of your life, non-stop, with no sleep, 24 hours a day – as little as a small fraction of your brain's storage would be exhausted. It's only up to you how much knowledge and information you want to gather and store. When was the last time your mind said to you – Stop, I can't take anymore- it's full now! It never happens and never will. The only thing stopping us from exploiting the brain to its fullest potential is ourselves.
Knowledge you use but don't remember is not a knowledge
We are living in a society where it is not necessary to remember. We tend to write things down (note-taking), that's how we remember these days. Once we need some information, we just turn on the computer and start googling whatever we need and then use that information and that's it. Now that's a total waste of a great ability. I am not saying note taking is not a good thing. It's great if it's a helpful source that allows you to understand, learn and in the end remember information. If you throw the note in the bin after you finish your purpose without putting the note's content into your memory, then you are wasting time. Knowledge we acquire and use without remembering is not a knowledge. The only thing you have done is forwarded a piece of information from one place to another. You haven't acquired anything for yourself.
Here is a little funny story that I just recalled: A long time ago there was a man who used to write down all of the information that he got hold of. He never memorized as he felt it was enough to write it down. He used to carry with him all his books wherever he went. One day he suddenly faced some thieves. They wanted everything he possessed including the books. He begged them to take whatever they wanted but not the books. Obviously the thieves didn't listen to his cries and took all of his books. Hence was his knowledge gone. All the years of writing thrown away. Thinking he possessed knowledge but left with nothing. The man decided from that day on he would never write but instead remember and store information in his brain. After some time he regained the lost knowledge and from there no crazy thieves could ever do him any harm (at least when it came to stealing his knowledge).
The moral here is, writing is okay, finding information on Wikipedia or Google is fine but we should never leave the knowledge only to other external sources. Try to memorize and remember any useful knowledge you come across. Let your brain become your library. We certainly have the ability and the strength. We have a mind waiting to be fed. Be conscious and make the most out of the incredible ability and strength your brain has to offer.
