Charles R. Drew, an American physician, was noted for his
research on blood plasma and was the originator of blood banks.
Drew was born on June 3, 1904, in Washington, D.C.. He graduated
from Amherst College in 1926, and became athletic director,
football coach and instructor in chemistry and biology at Morgan
State College in Baltimore. Drew later was a professor of surgery
and head of the Department of Surgery in the College of Medicine
at Howard University, and medical director of Freeman's Hospital.
On April 10, 1950, Drew died in an automobile accident.
