Virginia Police Discover 3 Corpses
In Backyard Bomb Shelter

LORTON, Va. - The decomposing bodies of three people missing for more than a week were found with multiple stab wounds and covered in lime powder in a World War II-era bomb shelter behind their house, police said.

The bodies of Jimmy Gardner, 64; his wife, Jannis, 63; and his father, Elmer, 90, were found late Tuesday in the cinderblock shelter beneath a tool shed at the northern Virginia home. They were identified Wednesday by family members.

Police said they were searching for a son of the couple, Keith J. Gardner, 39, but did not describe him as a suspect.

"We are concerned about his well-being at this time," said police spokeswoman Gretchen Lacharite.

Keith Gardner has a criminal record in Virginia dating to 1986, according to state corrections officials. In 1989, he was convicted on drug distribution and weapons charges and sentenced to eight years in prison.
