Billie Holiday
Billie "Lady Day" Holiday (1915-1959) was one of the most well known jazz singers to walk the earth. In 1936, Holiday became one of the first black vocalists to be featured with an all white band. Soon after, the young star recorded her first big hit. This controversial song called "Strange Fruit" later became known as her signature number. "Lady Day" wrote an autobiography entitled "Lady Sings the Blues." From the recordings of "Strange Fruit" to the writings of her autobiography, Billie Holiday had extraordinary talent.
